Many times I have referred to my favorite beading "how-to" book for answers to questions regarding beadwork.  Here is some basic, helpful information to get you started.  If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask us via email.

 

How many beads do I need to purchase?

 

Standard lengths:

Anklets:

  • Average Adult: 8-and-1/2"

  • Large Adult: 8-and-3/4 to 9-and-1/4"

Bracelets:

  • Newborn to 1 year: 4" to 5"

  • 1 to 3 years: 5" to 5-and-1/4"

  • 2 to 5 years: 5-and-1/4" to 5-and-1/2"

  • 4 to 8 years: 5-and-1/2" to 6"

  • 8 to 12 years: 6" to 6-and-3/4"

  • Teenager or Small/Petite Adult: 6-and-1/2" to 7-and-1/4"

  • Average Adult: 7-and-1/2"

  • Larger Adult: 7-and-3/4" to 8-and-1/4"

Necklaces:

  • Choker Length:  14 inches. It's a good idea to add a lobster clasp and 2 to 3 inches of extender chain so that anyone can wear it comfortably.

  • Short Length: 16 inches. This length should fall top of your breastbone.  This is a great length for necklaces that feature small beads or when you want to display a charm or pendant on a simple piece of chain or leather.

  • Princess Length: 18 inches. This length will fall just below the top of the breastbone.

  • Matinee Length: 24 inches. Reaching about mid-chest level.

  • Opera Length: 30 inches. Long & elegant, this length does not require the use of a clasp because it can slip over the head.

 

Number of beads/inch:

  • 2mm beads: 12.5 per inch

  • 3mm beads: 8 per inch

  • 4mm beads: 6.25 per inch

  • 6mm beads: 4 per inch

  • 8mm beads: 3 per inch

  • 10mm beads: 2.5 per inch

  • 12mm beads: 2 per inch

  • 14mm beads: 1.75 per inch

  • 16mm beads: 1.5 per inch

  • 18mm beads: 1.25 per inch

  • 24mm beads: 1 per inch
